Many of you may be wondering how much work having a dog can be! It might seem easy to manage a dog since you don't have to cook meals twice everyday as dog food is easily available. You also don't have to drop them off at school, take them to extra curricular activities or arrange playdates. However, let me tell you, dogs are just like babies and this responsibility is not for the weak-hearted, especially if you bring a large breed dog home.
Below are some points you need to consider before bringing a dog home, especially a Golden Retriever:
1. Regular walks/exercise: Will you be able to manage this? They need regular walks at least twice a day for their bathroom needs and to experience the fresh air. It's not just about emptying their stomachs; they need to sniff around and connect with nature. Regular exercise is necessary for them to stay fit, as it can prevent problems later in their life.
2. Time/Anxiety issues: Can you dedicate enough time to them? Dogs can develop anxiety if left alone for extended periods, especially when you're working for 9-10 hours. Will someone be available to take care of them, or is your home pet-proof for when they're on their own?
3. Training: The initial days are going to be tough, especially with potty training. Your house might get messy, so be prepared for that. Watch training videos on YouTube and teach them tricks. We believe that you can train them yourself, but if you lack time and patience, hiring a trainer might be necessary.
4. Finances: Be ready for vet bills and emergencies. Consider purchasing insurance, as even dog food, particularly the branded ones, can be expensive.
5. Shedding Period: Your house will never be as clean as before (so be prepared). Golden Retrievers shed throughout the year due to their abundant hair. Since they have more hair than humans, it can become an issue. They shed heavily twice a year, so you'll find hair everywhere. Regular combing might help reduce the mess, but it will still be present. Make sure you're not allergic, and having a vacuum cleaner is a must. We also regularly vacuum our car.

Please make sure you are ready for all this, as many people realise this after bringing them home and give them up for adoption after few months. If you are not sure, stay for 2-3 days with someone who has a dog.
